Antique Fans and Their History

Fans have been in existence for centuries. As per reports, the first known use of the fan was in 1882, but in Indian history, the usage of long banana leaves as fans for royalty has been prominent. Moreover, the invention of hand-held fans for better air is prominent throughout Indian history. It was only in 1882 and the subsequent years that electrical fans or ceiling fans were invented.

The ceiling fan has changed drastically in terms of look and functionality over time. What were once carved wooden fans with low air pressure are now custom-made ceiling fans in India. These fans are not only exquisite to look at, but they also have the best type of functionality that is infused with modern technology.

The timeline, or the history of the antique ceiling fan, is as follows:

  • Specially made hand-held fans that were used by royalty and commoners.

  • Lead fans or designer wooden fans for royalty are meant for Indian royalty.

  • The investigation of the ceiling fan.

  • Three and four-blade fans that were run by motors with a variety of designs and patterns etched on them.

  • Standardization of all types of fans posts the industrial revolution.

  • Categorization and modification of the “fan” into different types of fans surviving different functionalities.

  • Today, for interior decor purposes, there is a requirement to have unique designer ceiling fans for a unique look.

Antique fans have been repurposed into modern functional pieces, most notably ceiling fans. The best part about this concept is the preservation of traditional Indian culture and art. For those who want to uplift the look and feel of their home’s interior, having an antique ceiling fan is the best option as a long-term investment.
